Sweet, buttery caramelized onions that transform ordinary dishes into gourmet meals. Perfect for burgers, pizzas, soups and more!

Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 large yellow onions (or sweet onions like Vidalia)
  • 2 tbsp unsalted butter (or olive oil for vegan)
  • ½ tsp salt
  • 1 tsp balsamic vinegar (secret ingredient!)

Instructions

  1. Slice onions pole-to-pole into ¼-inch thick strips.
  2. Melt butter in heavy skillet over medium-low heat.
  3. Add onions and salt. Cook 5 minutes undisturbed, then stir.
  4. Continue cooking 40-50 minutes, stirring every 5 minutes, until deep golden brown.
  5. Optional: Deglaze with 1 tbsp water if onions stick.
  6. Off heat, stir in balsamic vinegar. Adjust salt to taste.

Notes

  • For faster caramelization: Add pinch of sugar after 20 minutes
